Your Professional Decline Is Coming (Much) Sooner Than You Think. I came across an interesting article in The Atlantic Magazine called, “Your Professional Decline Is Coming (Much) Sooner Than You Think: Here’s how to make the most of it.” By Arthur C Brooks Check out the insights into the article revealed in my discussion with my colleague and collaborator, Julie Treanor. It had an interesting picture accompanying which caught my eye - a man on a series of steps, coming to a peak at age 50, and then a steep decline and step down to 60 and 70. I think this resonated with me to start with as I’ve turned 50 not so long ago. The piece opens with the author wondering whether they could keep up what they felt had been a manic pace in their career. But they also saw that it was inevitable that at some point in their career, the pace would slow down and even stop. And they were left asking themselves the question, what then? Was there anything they could do now to give themselves a shot of avoiding the misery the author overheard someone else expressing in the seat behind them on an aeroplane. I thought this was interesting, because a lot of the advice we get, read or hear about is to cope with withstanding the pressures as the pace ramps up. But what happened when its all over, or things slow down, or if we ourselves slow down - which this article argues happens earlier than we might think it does.
