Learn and master the skills you need to be an incredible Assistant ➔ https://www.practicallyperfectpa.com/ https://www.practicallyperfectpa.com/newsletter/ In this video, we dive deep into Generation Z, the upcoming colleagues, clients, and customers you'll be working with. Christy Crump comprehensively describes what Gen Z is and shares valuable insights about this generation. She begins by discussing the approximate birth years of Gen Z, highlighting that different experts may provide varying dates for each generation. Christy aims to offer a middle ground and states that Gen Z encompasses birth years from 1995 to 2014. Next, she discusses the world population percentages of different generations and emphasises that these percentages may vary across regions. In Europe, millennials are the minority population, while boomers dominate. In contrast, the United States has a majority of millennials and Gen Zs. Christy highlights a fascinating statistic: by January 2022, 50% of the US workforce will be millennials (Generation Y), and 25% will be Gen Z or iGen. This means 75% of the US workforce will be under 41, showcasing the shifting demographic landscape. She also mentions that Gen Z will outnumber millennials in 48 out of 50 nations worldwide by January 2022. Additionally, she points out that Gen Z and millennials will be the dominant population in the four largest economies: China, the US, Japan, and Germany. However, Christy notes that these numbers may change due to the impact of Covid, as the population figures for 2022 have not been solidified yet. She anticipates potential adjustments in the future as a result of Covid's influence. Moving on to Generation Z's characteristics, Christy refers to Jean Twenge's book "iGen" and shares the ten "I" words that capture this generation's traits. These words include "indefinite," "in no hurry," "independent," "internet-based," "in-person no more," "insulated but not intrinsic," "insecure," "income insecurity," "irreligious," and "inclusive." Christy explains how Gen Z delays certain milestones compared to previous generations. For instance, they may delay getting a driver's license, engaging in sexual activity, using alcohol and drugs, getting married, having children, and entering the workforce. The underlying theme is caution and a focus on safety. She emphasises that caution does not equate to fear but rather a thoughtful and cautious approach to decision-making. Gen Z has grown up in a world influenced by terrorism, public violence, economic downturns, and the pervasive presence of smart devices. These factors shape their mindset and influence their choices. Christy emphasises that Gen Z is the first generation to have grown up without knowing a world without the internet. Smart devices are an integral part of their lives, enabling them to do everything online. This technological reliance affects how they approach work, communication, and problem-solving. She highlights that Gen Z values safety in their physical environment and mental health. The generation's safety-oriented mindset stems from growing up in an era characterised by terrorism, public violence, and economic recessions. Their cautious approach extends to routine-oriented behaviour and a desire for stability. Christy encourages parents, grandparents, and employers to understand and support Gen Z's need for safety. By providing a secure and supportive environment, fostering independence while offering guidance, and facilitating their transition into the workplace, we can better serve this generation. She acknowledges that Gen Z's cautious nature may result in declining civic involvement, lower crime rates, and a mental health crisis. Christy emphasises the importance of inclusive interactions, as Gen Z strongly values inclusivity, respects diversity, and aims to bridge societal divides. In conclusion, Christy encourages viewers to be open-minded and engage in conversations with Gen Z individuals to foster understanding. She stresses the significance of creating safe spaces, providing appropriate technology and training, and valuing face-to-face communication for effective collaboration. Join Christy Crump as she deep-dives into the unique characteristics and insights of Generation Z. Gain valuable knowledge that will help you better understand and collaborate with Gen Z colleagues, clients, and customers in the evolving professional landscape.
