👉 https://untanglephilosophy.com Why does an acorn grow into an oak tree? What explains that change? Aristotle’s concepts of potentiality and actuality offer part of the answer. Potentiality refers to something’s capacity to become something else, while actuality is the fulfilment of that capacity. An acorn is a potential oak tree, and once it has fully grown, it has actualised that potential. Aristotle ties this to his final cause—the purpose or goal of a thing. The final cause of an acorn is to become an oak tree. However, this process isn’t guaranteed; external factors like sunlight and water (efficient causes) are needed for it to reach its full potential. When conditions are right, potentiality becomes actuality, and the final cause is achieved. Perfect for University Courses & A-Level Philosophy & Ethics OCR & AQA or equivalent. 🔍 Key Points Covered: - The difference between potentiality (capacity for change) and actuality (fulfilment of that capacity). - How an acorn is a potential oak tree, and its development is an example of actualisation. - Aristotle’s final cause explains why things develop in a specific way. - External factors (efficient causes) influence whether potential is realised. 📖 Chapters: 00:00 Actuality & Potentiality 01:00 The Role of Final Cause 🔔 If you found this helpful, subscribe for more philosophy content! 👍 Like and share this video to help others understand Aristotle. 🗨️ Got questions?
