When a takeover target responds to a hostile bid by turning around and making a bid to acquire the hostile bidder, this is known as the Pac-Man Defense. The Pac-Man Defense gets its name from the video game Pac-Man; while Pac-Man is initially chased by ghosts, Pac-Man can turn around and begin eating the ghosts if he eats enough power pellets. An example of the Pac-Man Defense occurred in 2014, when Jos. A. Bank made a hostile bid for its competitor Men's Wearhouse. Men's Wearhouse responded by making its own bid to acquire Jos. A. Bank.
