This electronics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into oscillators and the barkhausen criterion. An oscillator consists of an amplifier and an attenuation network providing positive regenerative feedback. In order for sustain oscillations to occur, the amplifier and the positive feedback network must provide a total phase shift of 360 degrees to reinforce the oscillations at the input. In addition, the loop gain (product of the voltage gain and the attenuation factor) must be nearly equal to 1 for oscillations to continue.
