Career Development - INSANE Career Growth Using the 80/20 Rule ( GET PROMOTED FAST! )

The 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, states that 80% of the outcomes come from 20% of the causes. Practically speaking in the context of business, we may observe that 80% of our revenue comes from 20% of customers. Now this is not a concrete ratio, but more of a rule of thumb. The idea, however, is that the majority of your results, whatever that means for you as a professional, come from a small portion of your efforts. The goal here for you as a professional and as someone progressing in your career, it's important to understand what it is that you do (or can do) to produce BIG results for the organization, and advance your career. For my career, I've applied the 80/20 rule to land 6 promotions in my first 7 years, and what I learned pretty early on was the following: 1. I need to understand how my core responsibilities impacted the broader organization financially 2. I need to understand that if no one knows about the great work I'm doing, then it didn't really happen (unfortunately!) I explain in more detail in the video, but short of it is, I found additional projects and initiatives to lead that had an outsized impact on the broader organization (more than being successful in my core responsibilities would produce), and spent some time networking so that I can showcase what I've done and see where I can add value for others. When opportunities came open, the relationships that I built and the value that I was able to demonstrate and add to the organization meant that I was at, or near the top, of the consideration pool.
