Learn how to use Captain Chords, Captain Melody, Captain Deep and Captain Play by Mixed in Key. » For your free Chord Progression cheat sheet, click here: http://bit.ly/2OdAhD7 » Check out my production courses here: http://bit.ly/2Jp18wZ » Find out more about Captain Plugins here: http://bit.ly/2EVaLiQ Worth noting: • This is an impartial review. I haven’t been paid, I have no affiliate commissions or anything like that. They just approached me and asked me to review it and I thought it might be useful to you guys to do that. • As an EDMtips student you’ll get 30% off Captain Plugins. Overview: • 4 plugins in the suites (all purchased as one bundle for $79), inc. Captain Chords, Captain Deep, Captain Melody and Captain Play. • Plugins talk to each other, like some kind of digital, mystical beings, making sure your music’s always in key. • They all have internal instruments, or you can route them to your favourite VSTs (like Serum, for example). Captain Chords: • Tap in Rhythm • Use computer keyboard • Lots of different chords to experiment with • Drag to MIDI Captain Deep: • It writes bass lines that work with Captain Chords • Again, drag to MIDI when you’re happy Captain Melody: • As above, but melodies. Captain Play: • It’s a jamming plugin. A bit limited in my opinion, but definitely great if you’ve got no keyboard playing skills. Good for melodies. Summary: • Personal opinion: Should’ve named Captain Deep “Captain Bass”, but whatever. In summary, these are great tools if you a) want to get started writing melodic, chord-based compositions (so, stuff like progressive house, trance, future bass) but have no music theory knowledge whatsoever and want to get started staring away. b) Want to jam some quick ideas for inspiration using unfamiliar chords that you can then develop further. C) Good for experimenting with different inversions and flavours (or as I call it, “quality” of the chord). • Cons: a) Doesn’t substitute a working knowledge of music theory b) relinquishes some of the control you have from editing chords directly in your DAW (but, this one doesn’t really count as you can easily drag the MIDI notes in). They are bringing direct midi editing within the plugins soon, though. Essential Info: • 2 more plugins to the suite coming out this year – free upgrade. • Current price is $79, which - to be frank - is a bargain • EDMtips students now get 30% off (so, almost $24). • Available for Mac and windows. • Windows version there are currently a few more features than the Mac, but I suspect that will be rectified soon. • 64 bit only! I made that mistake at first as it didn’t load in Ableton 9 32 bit and I wondered why, so make sure your DAW is 64 bit if you’re going to use these. • I’m going to experiment more with this Hope this was useful to you!
