When a ratio of change is not constant the correlation is supposed to be linear. In another term, when the entire points on the scatter diagram start to bend close to a smooth curve, then the correlation is non-linear (curvilinear). The linear correlation coefficient measures the strength and direction of the linear relationship between two variables x and y. The sign of the linear correlation coefficient indicates the direction of the linear relationship between x and y.
