Geometric setting counts the number of trials until an event of interest happens. Binomials settings have a fixed set of n trials.
If a mean or average probability of an event happening per unit time etc., is given, and you are asked to calculate a probability of n events happening in a given time etc then the Poisson Distribution is used. The Binomial and Poisson distributions are similar, but they are different. Also, the fact that they are both discrete does not mean that they are the same. The Geometric distribution and one form of the Uniform distribution are also discrete, but they are very different from both the Binomial and Poisson distributions.
