How fuses work in a car is pretty much the same way fuses work in electrical circuits of all types. They are there to protect more expensive parts in a circuit and since they are typically all in a fuse block, they are often easier to replace, too! Always use a replacement of the same amperage, and NEVER put in a fuse with a higher amperage rating; you're just shifting the weak point to more expensive parts. Does an electric short blow a fuse? That's the idea, but it's possible for a short to occur before the fuse. The fuse box tends to be the first thing in the circuit on the positive side, so if this sort of short happens, something bad happened to a thick, important wire! Car fuse types include the following codes: Micro (Micro2, Micro3), Mini (APM, ATM), Standard (APR, ATC, ATO), and Maxi (APX).
