Learn exactly when to use Claude Code's Plan Mode versus Direct Execution — one of the most important decisions in Domain 3 of the Claude Certified Architect exam. Most developers default to one mode and apply it everywhere. That's a mistake. Direct execution is fast and efficient for well-scoped tasks, but it can create costly rework when used on complex, multi-file architectural changes. Plan mode adds an investigation step and a human approval checkpoint — but using it for a single-file bug fix is unnecessary overhead. In this part of the Zero to Claude Certified Architect series, you'll learn the four signals that tell you to use plan mode (multiple valid approaches, large scope, architectural decisions, and risk of expensive rework), the four signals that tell you to use direct execution (well-defined change, single file, no architectural decision, known approach), how the Explore subagent isolates verbose discovery output to preserve your main conversation context, and how to combine both modes — plan mode for investigation, then direct execution for implementing each planned step. We also walk through the decision framework you need for the exam: when the question describes a monolith-to-microservices restructuring or a large migration, the answer is plan mode first. When it describes adding a validation check or fixing a bug with a clear stack trace, the answer is direct execution. 🕒 Timestamps 00:00 Recap — Part 16: Path-Specific Rules 01:20 Two Ways Claude Code Works 03:00 When to Use Plan Mode 05:00 Plan Mode Concrete Example: Microservices Restructuring 07:00 When to Use Direct Execution 09:00 The Explore Subagent 11:30 Combining Plan Mode and Direct Execution 13:30 Decision Framework 15:30 Anti-Patterns to Avoid 17:30 Exam Summary This video is part of the Zero to Claude Certified Architect complete beginner's guide — a full course preparing you for the Claude Certified Architect exam, covering every domain and task in the official exam specification. 🔗 Series: Zero to Claude Certified Architect — Complete Beginner's Guide 📚 Domain 3 · Task 3.4: Determine when to use plan mode vs direct execution #ClaudeCertified #ClaudeCode #AIForBeginners #ClaudeAI #Anthropic #AIEngineering #MachineLearning #SoftwareDevelopment #ProgrammingTutorial #AIAssistant
