Full Transcript
An analysis of Anton Chekhov's short story, "The Lady with the Dog." The lecture focuses on the ways in which Gurov and Anna both engage in behavior and thought that is self-deceptive in order to maintain the fantasy that their relationship might be true love. Fantasy, as long as it is impossible, becomes a buffer to the harsh face of reality: Anna is able to maintain the fiction that she and Gurov are in love by maintaining the twin fiction that their love must remain a secret. The stories she tells herself sustain themselves as they sustain her, and prevent her from ever being honest with herself about her feelings.
