Before workers wear a respirator on the job, they must undergo a medical evaluation to see if they can wear the particular type of respirator safely. The medical evaluation looks for medical issues that might create a problem for the worker. In addition, after the medical evaluation, the worker should undergo a fit test to make sure the respirator fits properly and creates a tight seal.
