#WorldPressFreedomDay The role of journalists is to uphold the constitution and defend press freedom, says Maria Ressa (CEO & Executive Editor, Rappler.com).  Citizens have become mistrustful of the media and journalism continues to evolve, but its role is more "critical today than ever".  Ressa has been a journalist for more than three decades and co-founded Rappler.com, a news website in the Philippines.  She has been internationally awarded in recent years for her efforts to counter disinformation, fake news and attempts to silence the free press. She was was among the journalists named TIME's 2018 Person of the Year. She and her colleagues at Rappler have been arrested multiple times on various charges that some see as connected to their critical coverage of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte. The Democracy Project spoke to Maria Ressa in Toronto, where she delivered a keynote address at the Democracy XChange.
