You'll find a slew of useful reasons to use the circle of fifths. I just don't think it's the holy grail of understanding music theory. Specifically I personally, think its a cumbersome way work out key signatures, so you don’t really need it. Plenty will disagree, but the problem is most examples of usefulness of the circle are in the key of C, maybe F and maybe G. OK, maybe A Major as well…but then it starts to go horribly wrong. The tricky area is at the 5 o’clock to 8 o’clock point on the circle. All the enharmonic keys become much harder to memorise than good old C Major. Without looking at a circle of 5ths diagram, tell me what key is at the bottom 6 o’clock point… Another bonus, I feel with the method that I learned in music college is that it strengthens standard notation music reading. The circle of fifths is dissociated with reading music.
