What you don't want to do is give any answer that makes it look like you are blaming your former employer or coworkers. You also want to avoid anything that makes you look like a bad hire. Answers to avoid: They fired me because they're idiots. They believed this one dummy I worked with who said I was stealing everyone's lunches from the break room. I WAS NOT STEALING. It was him...I swear! They had this stupid rule about showing up on time. I put on Facebook that I really hate my boss and I forgot that we were Facebook friends. Whoops. To explain how you lost your last job without it preventing you from getting the next one the key is to concentrate on three things: Discuss what happened Talk about what you learned Explain how you've grown and why it won't ever happen again You have to be able to talk honestly and sincerely about why you were let go and be able to demonstrate how you've changed, otherwise employers may avoid hiring you to avoid a repeat of the same issue. While it is uncharacteristic of me to be late to work, I have to admit there were a few occasions where I had a hard time getting to the office on time.
