Welcome to Epic Flight Academy’s Instrument Rating Course! In this lesson, Mike Thompson takes a closer look at departure information and how pilots interpret key symbols, notes, and procedures found in the Terminal Procedures Publication (TPP). Understanding these charts is essential for every Instrument Rated Pilot preparing for a safe and legal IFR departure. You’ll learn how to obtain departure information, identify nonstandard takeoff minimums, calculate climb gradients, and interpret obstacle notes and diverse vector areas (DVAs). Mike also explains the Visual Climb Over the Airport (VCOA) procedure and how pilots apply feet per nautical mile (NM) conversions using climb and descent tables. By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to read and use TPPs effectively to ensure obstacle clearance and compliance with IFR departure requirements. #InstrumentRating #EpicFlightAcademy #IFRTraining #InstrumentPilot #FlightTraining #LearnToFly #Aviation 📘 Video Chapters 0:00 – Introduction 0:43 – How Do We Obtain Departure Information? 1:00 – Approach Plate 1:32 – Terminal Procedures Publication (TPP) 2:54 – TPPs for KEVB (New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport) 3:25 – What Are Obstacle Notes? 4:14 – TPPs for KOMN (Ormond Beach) 4:23 – What Are Nonstandard Takeoff Minimums? 5:00 – Feet per Minute vs. Feet per Nautical Mile 8:40 – Climb and Descent Tables in the TPP 11:05 – What Are Diverse Vector Areas (DVAs)? 12:30 – What Is the Visual Climb Over the Airport (VCOA)? 13:40 – Summary 🎓 Start Your Instrument Pilot Training: https://epicflightacademy.com/prequalification-enrollment Learn more about Epic Flight Academy’s Instrument Rating Course: https://epicflightacademy.com/instrument-rating/ This course is taught by Epic Flight Academy's own Mike Thompson.
