prep cook training - How to Plant Romaine Lettuce

Link to part one: https://youtu.be/RJOrl_RaErk So, my town has gone through a few lettuce shortages and I simply can't be without a weekly dose of Caesar salad. Because of this, I've had to learn how to regrow romaine lettuce with the bottom end of the head of a store bought lettuce. This video shows how to plant the bottom end of the lettuce once it has formed proper roots and new leaves to be able to thrive after being planted. Here is what I used: Pot: I used a 6.5 inch height by 8 inch wide terra cotta pot. This is what I had available, but in future, I would use a pot that is a at least 8 inches tall. I used a pot that has a hole in the bottom to make sure you don't drown the lettuce. Lettuce likes moist but well drained soil. Potting mix: I used a mix of organic potting soil for vegetables and organic compost (both were Miracle Grow Brand). And I used the ratios given in the directions of the compost. Planting: Dig a hole deep enough to make sure the soil covers all the way up to the base of the new leaves. Add additional soil if necessary. GENTLY pat the soil down. You don't want to damage the fragile roots! Watering: Gently water in the lettuce by focusing the water on the soil around it. Make sure you give it enough water so that it reaches the roots. In my case, I watered until I saw water coming out of the bottom of the pot and discarded any excess water that collected in the drip pan. *I recommend using a root booster if you have one on hand. If you don't have this, don't worry! Follow the directions on your root booster. Outdoor care: I placed one of my plants in a bright place in my garden, but it is quite hot where I live right now. Warmer than lettuce typically likes. because of this, I will have to water quite frequently. Indoor care: I placed my indoor plant in my brightest window possible. This plant will not require as much water. Ongoing watering & care: Romaine lettuce likes soil that is kept moist and well drained. It is easy to see when lettuce needs more water because it will start to wilt. It is better if you can water it prior to visible signs of wilting. I recommend sticking your finger one inch into the soil (around the edge of the pot so you don't damage the plant). If it feels dry, water it. Romaine will thrive if you fertilize it, but take heed! If you fertilize too much too soon, you can damage the young roots. Let me know how this worked for you in the comments below!
