This video explains how to Separable Verbs (trennbare Verben). These are verbs that appear as one whole word in their infinitive and past participle, but separate at various times in the present and imperfect tenses. They are reasonably common, so itโ€™s a good idea to familiarise yourself with them. Recognising and using these verbs will make you sound like a native in no time! At GCSE, these verbs always impress examiners, and will help to make your work stand out! Here are some of the most common separable verbs and their past participles: 1. ankommen (to arrive) โ€“ angekommen (sein) 2. abfahren (to depart) โ€“ abgefahren (sein) 3. aufwachen (to wake up) โ€“ aufgewacht (sein) 4. aufstehen (to get up) โ€“ aufgestanden (sein) 5. ausgehen (to go out) โ€“ ausgegangen (sein) 6. auskommen (to get along) โ€“ ausgekommen (sein) 7. umziehen (to move house) โ€“ umgezogen (sein) 8. einziehen (to move in) โ€“ eingezogen (sein) 9. ausziehen (to move out) โ€“ ausgezogen (sein) 10. einschlafen (to fall asleep) โ€“ eingeschlafen (sein) 11. herkommen (to come here) โ€“ hergekommen (sein) 12. einkaufen (to shop) โ€“ eingekauft (haben) 13. herunterladen (to download) โ€“ heruntergeladen (haben) 14. hochladen (to upload) โ€“ hochgeladen (haben) 15. mitmachen (to participate) โ€“ mitgemacht (haben) 16. zugeben (to admit) โ€“ zugegeben (haben) 17. stattfinden (to take place) โ€“ stattgefunden (haben) 18. teilnehmen (to take part) โ€“ teilgenommen (haben) 19. herausfinden (to find out) โ€“ herausgefunden (haben) 20. abwaschen (to wash up / wash the dishes) โ€“ abgewaschen (haben) 21. einladen (to invite / to pay for (as a gift)) โ€“ eingeladen (haben) For example, โ€˜ich lade dich einโ€™ = Iโ€™m inviting you / Iโ€™ll get this (in a restaurant / cafรฉ) I will continue to update the above list, but itโ€™s certainly some to get going with for now!
