(SCRIPT) ---- There are two important things that we all must do in our day to day lives. The first is to be understood. The word understood is the past tense of understand. The act of letting other people know exactly what you mean is in important. In daily life, you want to be understood. And of course, the other people around you need to understand what it is you are saying. Sometimes we might try to get another person to understand what we are saying. We will try our best to explain something as clearly as possible. Of course, in this situation it is important that the other person is listening. You might say that most conversations involve more than one action. The action of expressing and listening both take place during any type of conversation, whether you are speaking to one individual or a whole crowd of people, the same rule applies. You have to make sure your message is clear and those around you must be listening. To listen is to give your attention to what is being said. I'm sure you have been in this situation yourself. There you are, trying to explain something to another person. You are being as clear as you can in your explanation. However, the person you are speaking to is not listening to what you are saying. The other person is not paying attention. To pay attention is to give your whole observance to a particular thing. You pay attention to something. You give your full concentration to what is happening around you. The opposite of this is often expressed as 'not giving your full attention' or 'not paying attention'. Someone is talking to you, but you are not concentrating on them. Your mind is elsewhere. You are not giving your full attention. There are many reasons why this might happen. Perhaps you are distracted by something else. Maybe you have something on your mind and it is making it hard for you to concentrate. Perhaps the other person is talking about something you have no interest in. We often view this type of behaviour as rude and disrespectful. There is an interesting phrase that expresses the feeling of talking to someone who is clearly not listening to you. You might say talking to you is 'like talking to a brick wall'. This phrase clearly shows that you are annoyed by the other person's behaviour. Clearly they are not listening to what you are saying. You might as well be talking to a brick wall. Perhaps someone is not taking your advice. They are ignoring your suggestions and because of that, they keep making the same mistakes over and over again. You can say that your advice is 'falling on deaf ears'. Everything you have said has been ignored. Once again, you might also say that 'it is like talking to a brick wall'. All of your good advice has been wasted. The other person is not listening to what you are saying. "Are you even listening to what I'm saying?" "I might as well be talking to a brick wall." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr Duncan has been teaching English for free on YouTube for over 18 years.
