Welcome to Aerominds Training Centre! In this video, we continue our DGCA Technical General – Flight Instruments series with the Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI) and its errors, an important and highly testable topic for Directorate General of Civil Aviation CPL examinations. This lesson is designed especially for student pilots who are new to aviation theory and want clear concept-based understanding instead of memorising complicated textbook definitions. In the first part of this video, we understand the Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI) — an instrument that tells the pilot how fast the aircraft is climbing or descending, expressed in feet per minute (ft/min). You will learn: • Why the altimeter alone cannot show rate of climb or descent • Why pilots need a dedicated instrument to control vertical speed • The principle of operation of the VSI using static pressure changes • How the restricted choke (metering unit) creates a pressure difference • Why the VSI has a normal time lag of about 4–6 seconds • The construction of the VSI, including the capsule and airtight case • How pressure changes cause the capsule to expand or compress, moving the pointer on the dial • Instrument error caused by small manufacturing imperfections • Position (pressure) error caused by sudden changes in airspeed • Why this error is often noticeable during take-off acceleration • Manoeuvre-induced error caused by short-term pressure fluctuations at the static vent • The role of counterbalance weight inertia inside the instrument mechanism • Time lag error, and why the VSI pointer cannot respond instantly • Why this lag becomes noticeable during large climbs or descents We also explain what happens if the static pressure system becomes blocked, and how this affects multiple cockpit instruments such as the airspeed indicator, altimeter, and Machmeter. This video focuses on concept clarity, cockpit understanding, and DGCA exam logic, helping you understand the instrument properly and avoid common MCQ traps. Whether you are preparing for DGCA CPL, ATPL, or starting your pilot training journey, this lesson will help you build a strong foundation in aircraft flight instruments.
